As some of you might know, I do the budget travel section for the Guardian newspaper on Saturdays, which involves me being an extremely lucky swine, and spending half my time cavorting around Europe. Each time I return I perpetrate something of a blurb frenzy for the Youngin Europe Guide.
Why bother, you ask, when it’s already been printed in your name in a big snazzy newspaper?
Two reasons. First, when writing for a national newspaper I have to, how do I say this, behave myself. Sure I can have a laugh, but when blurbing, one has the opportunity to (in the words of Alasdair Campbell) sex it up a little. For example, in my latest article on Oslo I talked about the Astrup Fearnly gallery (pictured), but chose not to mention the big blowjob print in one of the back rooms. But in the blurb, I did. In the article I mentioned that in the Nasjonalgalleriet I saw a version of The Scream for free, but didn’t mention the fun you can have doing silly poses next to it.
Second, I can write about things that didn’t even make it into the article. This isn’t because they were shit, it’s simply because there is a word limit, and bases to cover. So on here I can tell y’all about Blitz, where you can dine on the cheap with anarchists, and Mono, a cool little bar that throws free gigs every Saturday.
So there it is; a little Youngin Europe value added service. And perhaps a little compare and contrast fun between stuff written for work, and stuff written for play.
