If your a student living in Leeds, then the chances are you will either live in uber cool Headingley or ruff-round-the-edges Hyde park. My back yard is situated in the latter of the two.
Rows upon rows of back-to-back redbrick is the main feature of hyde park, howeverl, in and around them there are plenty of interesting places to go...
- The Brudnell Social Club is what i like to call a 'semi-legendary' location. With two large rooms (and bars) this place is one half quiet local, one half International gig venue. It really is an odd mix that must be witnessed. I suggest nipping down to watch Deal Or No Deal on the 70 inch plasma TV whilst sipping a local brew with the regulars, followed by a quick Franz Ferdinand gig (they played a secret gig here a few years back) in the other room... lovely stuff.
- The Hyde Park picture house is a cracking one screen cinema smack bang in the middle of Hyde park. Surely dating back to early 20th century this classic little cinema, complete with balcony, is far better than the plethora of other characterless big box multiplex mega screen cinemas that seem to be everywhere else. The listings are also independent, so you can find some genuinely decent films on throughout the year... top venue!
- The Bunker Gallery, a shameless plug. I've been running a rather unique art gallery out of my basement for almost a year now, and suffice to say, i think it's ace. However its not just me; the Leeds guide rated it as one of the top 20 things to do in Leeds 07 -and when you look further none of the other venues in the top 20 are in Hyde Park so maybe my top 5 is incorrect? With three more exhibitions planned on random Sunday evenings this little student gallery has some quality work that is worth a look.
- Pitzacano pizza take-away is a regular for any lazy student in Hyde Park. Thankfully its a touch better than all the other mediocre joints that surround it. In fact such is the reputation of Pitzacano that it has its own fan club online, i'm going to join up now!
- The Cemic Tavern is the nearest pub to me that is not heavily saturated with inebriated students, but unfortunately it is not actually in Hyde park... well not quite anyway, as many would say it is situated in Woodhouse. That aside it is a lovely little tavern playing live jazz, folk and blues on numerous nights along with good beers and a board game of your choice.
